"God Save the Green" Fenianism and Fellowship in Victorian Ontario

Historians have generally argued that Fenianism attracted very little support in British North America especially because the Canadian Irish, unlike their American counterparts, were quite loyal to Britain. Evidence from Canada West, however, reveals that there was, in fact, a province-wide network of Fenian lodges that engaged in activities familiar in places such as Cork or Chicago. While traditional Irish Catholic leaders in Canada West opposed Fenianism from the outset, men like Michael Murphy and Patrick Boyle built a significant movement for those seeking fellowship and protection from discrimination and hardship. Almost all Colonial Irish opposed the change in direction taken by the American Fenians in 1866. Historians have misinterpreted this opposition as evidence of loyalty to Britain; rather, most Fenians simply abandoned a movement they had joined for other reasons.

Work-Life Balance Programs to Improve Employee Performance

    Get PDF
Although work-life balance programs in the United States have become increasingly popular through the years, there is still a need to understand the contributions of these programs on employee performance. The purpose of this case study was to explore the work-life balance programs that nonprofit school leaders utilize to improve employee performance at a charter school organization. The job demands-resources model formed the conceptual framework for this study. Data were collected through semistructured interviews from a purposeful sample of 10 managers and 10 non-managerial employees working at a charter school organization in Harlem, New York. Data collection also included organizational performance track indicator documents on employee absenteeism, turnover, motivation, productivity, job satisfaction, and retention, archived organizational records on WLB programs, and current WLB programs and policies guidelines. Through methodological triangulation, a number of themes emerged. These themes included work-life balance programs\u27 effectiveness, the importance of a supportive work environment, employee commitment and motivation, employee well-being and productivity, employee job satisfaction and quality work life, organizational culture change, and low utilization of the job sharing program. According to the study results, work-life balance programs could help improve organizational culture and employee overall performance. The results of this study may contribute to social change by preparing employers for success while simultaneously positioning individuals to attain optimum balance between work and life responsibilities

Fraser Economic Commentary - The complete catalogue of reviews, outlooks and articles : 1975-2015

    Get PDF
To coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Fraser of Allander Institute and the Fraser of Allander Economic Commentary, the University of Strathclyde Andersonian Library has completed the necessary work to create a fully annotated and accessible digital archive of entire Fraser of Allander Economic Commentary, 1975 - 2015. The archive is the single most complete, publically accessible archive of detailed analyses and commentary on Scotland’s economy and economic development from 1975 to the present. The archive includes all economic forecasts, Scottish, UK and international outlooks plus all articles published by the Fraser Economic Quarterly (1975 - 2007) and the Fraser of Allander Economic Commentary (2008 onwards)

Analyzing the Binding of Co(II)-specific Inhibitors to the Methionyl Aminopeptidases from \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e and \u3cem\u3ePyrococcus furiosus\u3c/em\u3e

Methionine aminopeptidases (MetAPs) represent a unique class of protease that is capable of the hydrolytic removal of an N-terminal methionine residue from nascent polypeptide chains. MetAPs are physiologically important enzymes; hence, there is considerable interest in developing inhibitors that can be used as antiangiogenic and antimicrobial agents. A detailed kinetic and spectroscopic study has been performed to probe the binding of a triazole-based inhibitor and a bestatin-based inhibitor to both Mn(II)- and Co(II)-loaded type-I (Escherichia coli) and type-II (Pyrococcus furiosus) MetAPs. Both inhibitors were found to be moderate competitive inhibitors. The triazole-type inhibitor was found to interact with both active-site metal ions, while the bestatin-type inhibitor was capable of switching its mode of binding depending on the metal in the active site and the type of MetAP enzyme

Full-wave approach for x-ray phase imaging

    Get PDF
We present a rigorous forward model for phase imaging of a 3-D object illuminated by a cone-shaped x-ray beam. Our model is based on a full-wave approach valid under the first Rytov approximation, and thus can be used with large and thick objects, e.g., luggage and human patients. We unify light-matter interaction and free-space propagation into an integrated wave optics framework. Therefore, our model can accurately calculate x-ray phase images formed with sources of arbitrary shape, and it can be effectively incorporated into x-ray phase tomography as a forward model. Within the best of our knowledge, this is the first non-paraxial, full-wave model for X-ray phase imaging

    Temporal reshaping of two-dimensional pulses.

An analytic study of complete cylindrical focusing of pulses in two dimensions is presented, and compared with the analogous three-dimensional case of focusing over a complete sphere. Such behavior is relevant for understanding the limiting performance of ultrafast, planar photonic and plasmonic devices. A particular spectral distribution is assumed that contains finite energy. Separate ingoing and outgoing pulsed waves are considered, along with the combination that would be generated in free space by an ingoing wave. It is shown that for the two dimensional case, in order to produce a temporally symmetrical pulse at the focus, an asymmetric pulse must be launched. A symmetrical outgoing pulse is generated from a source with asymmetric time behavior, or an anti-symmetric input pulse. These results are very different from the corresponding three-dimensional case, and imply fundamental limitations on the performance of ultrafast, tightly focused, two-dimensional devices
